Montana’s July 2026 serving-cap and exit-packaging rules are the kind of mid-year change that breaks a register built by people who have never run one. The dispensaries our own team operates run on CannAgent in production — disclosed as ours — so a rule that flips on a date is a build ticket, not a surprise. We’re not live in Montana yet; this page is the honest version of that sentence.

Montana’s serving caps, exit packaging, and tax lanes all moved on July 1, 2026. Here’s where the rules actually stand, sourced from statute and the DOR:
The per-serving edible cap dropped to 5 mg on July 1, 2026.
HB 636 halved the ingestible per-serving THC ceiling from 10 mg to 5 mg, and product labeled above 5 mg per serving may not be sold after the cutover. A register has to flag and block the noncompliant SKUs the moment the rule flips — sell-through is not allowed.

Exit packaging and labeling changed the same day.
HB 792 revised the warnings beside the universal symbol and added an addiction-resource QR code to all exit packaging, with new education posters at the counter. That is a receipt-and-label pipeline change with a hard date, not a nicety.

Two excise lanes, no general sales tax, county-level local.
20% on adult-use, 4% on medical, with no statewide sales tax and an optional county local-option up to 3% resolved by county, not city. The lane split and the county resolution both have to happen at the register.
